AF Nikkor 50 mm F/1.8 D FX Lens on the D3400
May 16, 2017
Hello,
Total beginner. Last week I purchased my outset DSLR (The Nikkon D3400)- with it came a standard 18-55mm Kit lens. I was told I should also investigate the possibility of purchasing a prime number lens. I did a chip of inquiry and decided to get a 50mm. I went with the "AF Nikkor 50 mm F/one.8 D FX" from Amazon. It arrived yesterday and when attaching information technology I was greeted with the bulletin "incompatible lens" in every mode. I switched to manual and the lens worked fine. I have googled effectually a lot and cant find a reason why it would only work in manual. I guess it is not a massive issue as I will need to learn in manual anyway but I am looking at purchasing a 35 mm also and I would similar information technology to be compatible with all the modes on my photographic camera.
Cheers for taking the time to read and apologies if I accept missed something obvious.
PS - I take tried locking the discontinuity to the highest setting and it all the same wont work in whatever other mode only manual.
Cheers,
Daniel

Your camera does not have an internal focusing motor and the D lenses don't take motors either. You need a M lens.

Howdy, it is non compatible with your camera. This lens needs a screw-driven bodies such as D7200 and to a higher place.
For your camera, you need a newer 50mm f/1.8G lens - discover the 'Thou' at the stop, it volition piece of work on your camera in all modes.
You could render it in exchange for it. Withal, G version costs a scrap more than.

This http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility-lens.htm is from a man who isn't universally esteemed on here, simply it is a adequately comprehensive and almost totally right treatment of Nikon lens compatibility.

Hello, Daniel:
Beginning with the D3400, Nikon removed the ability for the body to meter with AF-D lenses. Interesting motion equally all entry level bodies beginning with the D40 - D3300 metered with only fine with these lenses. I have used a couple with my D40. Focus has e'er been manual as mentioned above which can be a fun change of footstep.
You are not doing annihilation wrong. The only way to meter the D3400 & AF-D lenses is in Thou fashion.

For that camera you'll need the 50mm 1.8 G. No "D" serial lenses volition work. Information technology's super unfortunate that many people buy the Nikon camera like yous did, and the 5xxx series as well then find that many older (and awesome) lenses are incompatible.
In many means these "entry level" cameras are a imitation economy and I wish this was clearer because they are great in many means - simply for the person who bought information technology on a budget it's hard to abound by standard lens on a budget.

Hi, Andrew:
You're welcome. It is easy to miss.
I believe they also removed the" ultra sound sensor cleaning" function from the D3400. The D3300 sounds like a skillful deal to me.

Wow. I didn't know they had gone some other step farther. Has the same thing happenend in the 5xxx range?
This whole thing is a pet peeve of mine that I talk (rant?) about here so I'm non out of appointment on this additional change.
I guess bottom line is that in that location are now Iii ways in which entry level Nikons don't support lens backward compatibility:
1) autofocus (lack of screw bulldoze)
2) This D serial metering consequence
3) physical reader of older transmission focus lens discontinuity rings.
In my mind the best cameras to purchase on a budget are (depending on the upkeep)
D90, D7100, D700, D3s
although the D90 also does non support point 3 and I guess I should reconsider the D7200 over the D7100.

Stick with Manual fashion. More command...Too, you lot should've got the 50mm 1.8G. This i is the new version of the 1.8D. Improve engineering.

I would substitution your lens for the 35 1.8G DX lens. I think y'all will find it more of an all around useful lens than the 50mm on your crop body.

Entry level buyers are rewarded past compatibility with the fabulous AF-P upkeep lenses.
An ability sadly lacking in earlier cameras like the near of the ones y'all mention .
Unfortunate given thei lenses are demonstrably fast, quiet and with sharp autofocus wrapped in a very lightweight packet.

This is incorrect. Sorry for being negative.
I have a D3400 and the 50mm one.8D.
They practice work together, but only in transmission style. For the reasons nearly metering and the need to focus manually using the ring on the lens as described in this thread.

Your camera has no information well-nigh F value. I have also Canon 400D with same 50mm and one.8F as Nikon D3400, merely Canon tin can photo with 1/l with ISO 400 in my room. Nikon CAN'T.
