Breezy, polished linen shorts

A close up of a person wearing Alex Crane Bo Shorts in light brown. The shorts are linen and have a drawstring.

I've long shied away from wearing linen clothing because I have memories of the material being scratchy and uncomfortable. Despite this, I recently decided to take the plunge on a pair of Alex Crane's linen drawstring Bo shorts. Surprise! The Bo shorts feel fantastic. They're soft against my thighs, something the company ascribes to their being prewashed. The drawstring style makes these shorts easy to throw on, and they have three pockets for storing essentials. Though linen tends to wrinkle more easily and obviously than other fabrics, I think that texture gives the shorts a charming, distressed look.

For active days under the sun

A person standing outdoors wearing a pair of Swrve Transverse Trouser Shorts in grey.

If growing up in a small town in the '80s taught me anything, it's that riding your bike around the neighborhood on a hot summer day is basically a legal requirement. But in my experience, shorts have a tendency to ride up—or, worse, billow out—while I'm riding a bike. And if you go too short with the inseam, you might as well not bother wearing shorts at all. Swrve's Transverse Trouser Shorts fix these issues with a slim fit, cut like a pair of short skinny jeans. Think "what if I turned these Levi's 511's into jorts?" but without the weight of denim. The Swrve shorts are made of nylon and provide a bit of stretch. And they offer nice-to-have features like a zippered rear pocket and mesh pockets. They're my go-to pair for casual biking, mountain biking, or hiking.

Easy, breezy, beautiful summer shorts

Summertime for me means wanting to frolic outdoors with as few sartorial encumbrances as possible. The Uniqlo Men Dry Stretch Easy Shorts manage to accomplish that while still allowing you to feel like a respectable adult. They're light and comfy enough to throw on right out of bed (bless you, drawstring), but they're also put-together enough that you can don them for a garden party or to meet friends for a drink on a hot summer night. I've had three pairs for about two years, and they have held up nicely as a breezy summer go-to.

Sick elastic waistband, bruh

If you think of frat parties and keggers when you hear someone say "Chubbies shorts," you're not alone. Chubbies launched its website toward the end of my college career (Google the year; I refuse to date myself here), and back then, wearing them to outdoor barbecues and tailgates felt like a rite of passage. The truth is, Chubbies The Staples are just plain comfortable. They have an elastic waistband, which makes them super-easy to take on and off, and they're made with 3% spandex, for optimal maneuverability. These shorts come in a variety of colors. And if the 4-inch inseam feels too short for you (prude!), Chubbies also offers versions with 5-inch and 7½-inch inseams.

Stretchy shorts for a weekend getaway

A person wearing J.Crew Dock Shorts in Stretch Chino in thyme Green, the short's elastic waistband and drawstring visible.

Photo: J.Crew

My go-to item for casual summer occasions and everyday wear: the J.Crew Dock Short in Stretch Chino. These shorts are comfy (there's a little stretch, but not so much that they're too informal) and breathable (the fit is just the right amount of slim before becoming dumpy). The 6-inch inseam is the perfect length. The pockets are deep but not obtrusive, and they don't flare out. And the elastic waistband is nice, so you don't have to worry about buttons being too tight if you pig out. My oldest pair, after a year and a half of a lot of wear, is seeing some fading, but my newer pair is in pristine condition. I wear these shorts while lounging around and biking, as well as when I'm hanging in a park, at casual bars, and wherever water is involved. If I could bring only one pair of shorts on a weekend trip (or even a weeklong trip), it would be these J.Crew shorts.

Shorts with supportive built-in underwear—that's it, that's the hook

a Person wearing a khaki pair of Birddogs Indianapolis Jones shorts.

Photo: Birddogs

Birddogs are great performance shorts because, unlike the other pairs we've highlighted here, they come with a built-in underwear liner that doesn't move around when you do. Whether you buy from the company's line of gym shorts, khakis, oxfords, or seersuckers, you can expect the same great support. And although these shorts traditionally have an 8-inch inseam, if you want your shorts a little shorter or longer, there are also 6-inch and 9-inch options.

Sky's out, thighs out

Earlier in 2021, the internet lost its cool over Milo Ventimiglia's short shorts, learning what we've been saying here at Wirecutter for years: that men's thighs are good, actually. Even if you're not built like an actor (which I definitely am not), your knees should not be a source of shame. Faced with the omnipresent heat of SoCal summer—worsened by an old apartment without air conditioning—I've embraced 5-inch-inseam shorts, like these from J.Crew. The cotton/elastane blend provides a bit of flex, which helps these shorts feel comfortable and less constricting. And the button closure and belt loops make this pair seem less likely to slide downward than those with a drawstring. Let your thighs feel the kiss of the sun, my friends. Just use plenty of sunscreen.

Drawstring shorts for work and play

I'm one of those people who tend to run hot, so for me, the most comfortable clothing is lightweight and breathable. When I'm not decked out in linen, these Prana Vaha shorts are my go-to for summer comfort wear. I've had a pair of Prana pants made from the same super-soft, super-light hemp blend for so long that they're getting threadbare. And I loved them so much that this spring I added the shorts, too (in Dark Ginger). They're perfect to wear while you're lounging around on the couch or in the sun. Also, thanks to the look of the fabric and the false fly sewn in front, you can throw on a shirt when you leave the house, and no one will suspect that these shorts have a drawstring, elastic waistband.

Water-resistant shorts that look good in and out of the gym

A person wearing a pair of Olivers All Over Shorts with the elastic waistband and drawstring visible.

Photo: Olivers

I bought the Olivers All Over Short in mid-2018, when we started recommending this pair in our guide to the best men's travel clothes. The water-resistant Olivers (made from 87% nylon and 13% spandex) look good enough to wear outside the gym—they even sport a false fly, which gives them a semblance of professionalism that other performance shorts lack. They have a 7½-inch inseam—a modest fit for a different style—and come in six colors. One caveat with this pair: We've found that these shorts begin to pill after about 18 months of wear.

A nicer lounge short

A pair of Nice Laundry Lounge Shorts in burgundy.

Photo: Nice Laundry

In this new age of soft pants, none are softer or more comfortable than Nice Laundry's Pocket Lounge Shorts. With their mesh nylon exterior, these shorts remind me of a pair of basketball shorts—but more luxurious. So you get the airflow of shorts designed for working out, but you also get a length and style more suited to laconically lounging on a quiet summer Sunday. And these have enough stretch that they never feel constricting. The shorts come in a 6-inch and (more recently) a 4-inch inseam and a variety of colors. I naturally went for a pair in black with an embroidered skull, because I can never not lean in to a goth-dad aesthetic. And even though these are primarily marketed toward men (for whatever value of "men" you ascribe), their flex, stretch, and softness mean they work well on all bodies.

From the mountains to the bar

A person walks in a pair of red shorts.

Photo: Bonobos

The Rec Short from Bonobos is the perfect pair for a summer spent in and out of the city. These shorts are durable, stretchy, and sweat-wicking, so they're well suited to a hot day spent hiking. Yet they don't look so aggressively "outdoorsy" that you'd feel weird wearing them to throw back Shock Tops with friends at the local bar. Plus, they're great if you're stuck in the city during a heatwave; they're loose and breathable, and their elastic waistband makes them easy to throw on and pull off.

The Rec shorts are available with either a 5- or a 7-inch inseam, and they come in seven colors at the time of this writing. Also, we appreciate that Bonobos offers the Rec shorts in sizes XS to 3XL.

A subtly stylish short for prime relaxation

A person stands in a pair of blue shorts.

Photo: Outdoor Voices

The Outdoor Voices Sunday Short is my ultimate weekend short. This pair is absurdly comfortable. The thick polyester/spandex fabric has just enough stretch, the false-fly elevates them above your average basketball shorts, and they have an easy elastic waist and well-placed pockets. The 7-inch inseam reveals exactly the right amount of thigh, too. These shorts embody peak subdued athleisure.

Would I wear them to a bar? Nope. That's not their vibe. But would I go from a Netflix marathon to grabbing an iced coffee at a café? Absolutely, and I would feel subtly stylish doing it.

Sweatshorts for summer weather

A person wearing a pair of Lou & Grey Signature Softblend Drawstring Shorts in black, with the drawstring waist visible.

Photo: Loft

I love wearing sweatpants, but that's ultimately not feasible once temperatures start rising. So at the beginning of quarantine, I bought a couple pairs of the Lou & Grey Signature Softblend Drawstring Shorts, and I've worn them probably one out of every three days since. They're loose-fitting and extremely soft, and they have an elastic drawstring waist, so they're great for lounging. They also have a flattering, tailored silhouette. And because they hit mid-thigh, it doesn't feel weird to wear them while running errands. The fabric has kept its shape and softness through dozens of washes, with no pilling to be found. These shorts come in a variety of neutrals and bright colors, and they have deep pockets for your keys/headphones/whatever. For me, they're a warm-weather essential.

Sustainable, size-inclusive shorts

I treated myself to the Girlfriend Collective Gazelles, and they're so wonderful. With their sweat-wicking material and zippered pockets, these shorts are great to wear while running. But they're also super-comfortable and, dare I say, fashionable to lounge around in. Girlfriend Collective is also pretty size-inclusive and committed to sustainability (these shorts divert 29 water bottles from landfills!). This company can have stock issues, though, because it often makes limited runs.

Practical shorts with expansive, deep pockets

A person standing with a hand in a pocket of their Patagonia Women's Baggies Shorts, the elastic waist of the shorts visible.

Photo: Patagonia

When the weather warms up, I like to spend as much time outside as possible. Patagonia Women's Baggies Shorts are an important part of my adventure-seeking, toddler-chasing days (and they're great inside all year round, of course). The quick-drying, recycled nylon fabric feels breezy even on the hottest, most humid afternoons. And these shorts can handle any situation I throw at them, from getting caught in a summer downpour to fording a creek to taking a quick dip in a lake—even serving as a napkin for little Popsicle-covered hands. The elastic waist doesn't pinch, and the shorts don't ride up when I scramble over boulders or crouch down to inspect wildflowers. I also like that the pockets on the 5-inch Baggies are deep enough to hold the essentials (keys, a phone), as well as newly acquired treasures and maybe even snacks. And because the shorts have a looser cut, you don't look like you've got panniers at your hips when the pockets are full. Patagonia has been making these shorts for decades, in an ever-changing array of colors and patterns, sometimes with a liner, sometimes without. For me, Baggies are about practicality; there's nothing particularly flattering about the view from behind (and some might find the rear a tight fit), but wearing them frees me up to take in the view in front of me.

Polished shorts with a stitch-on belt detailing

A person wearing a pair of light grey Athleta Skyline Short II shorts, with the the matching fabric belt tied in a bow.

Photo: Athleta

Even though I work from home full-time, I like wearing clothes that look professional. Ideally, they're also really comfortable. That's why the Athleta Skyline Pant II is my favorite. But Texas starts to warm up in March, and though the pants' fabric is super-breathable, I prefer wearing the Skyline Short II in warmer weather. Like their pant sibling, these shorts are made of fabric that is lightweight and stays wrinkle-free. I'm 5 foot 1, and the 4-inch inseam makes the shorts just long enough that I still feel polished and professional. The stitched belt is also a lovely detail.

Shorts that won't pill or unravel in the wash

A person wearing an orange pair of Athleta Trekkie North Shorts, a hand in one pocket, with the stretchy waist band visible.

Photo: Athleta

I ordered a version of the Athleta Trekkie North Short a summer or so back, and they quickly became my favorite shorts. Every spring I add another pair to my collection. The fabric breathes so much better than that of chinos or jeans shorts, and the slight bit of stretch means they don't ride up or cut into your belly and legs when you sit down. They can be dressed up with nice sandals and short-sleeve blouses for a casual LA office vibe, or they can go sporty with a tank top and sneakers. These shorts have actually useful pockets—pockets!—that zip closed, so you don't need to stress about your keys or cards falling out on a walk. And they wash up like a dream—no pilling or unraveling. I've rocked these all day at work, then at the playground with the kiddo, and later to dinner with friends, and they don't lose their shape.

A nostalgic pair of cutoff denim shorts

A person wearing a pair of jean Abercrombie & Fitch Curve Love 90s High Rise Cutoff Shorts with the button closure visible.

Photo: Abercrombie & Fitch

After over a year spent in quarantine and on a personal strike from real pants, I accepted the truth when I opened my pants drawer: I was going to need a new pair of shorts that fit into the looser style I embraced during the pandemic. I love the fit of my Abercrombie & Fitch jeans, so I bought a pair of its Curve Love 90s High Rise Cutoff Shorts. The looser hip and thigh make these the most comfortable jeans shorts I've owned in years. I'm a bottom-heavy person, and I often need to size up in pants. But the Curve Loves gave me the roomier cut I was looking for in my regular size. They cinch in just enough at the waist and hem to look cute, while staying a little baggy both for a cool factor and for comfort. In the short time I've owned them, they've become my warm-weather WFH uniform. I can't wait to wear them to the beach all summer long.

Surprisingly great budget shorts

A person with a hand in the pocket of their Old Navy Utility-Pocket Shorts, the elastic waist band and drawstring visible.

Photo: Old Navy

Last spring, I was unexpectedly back at my parents' home in Arizona. In order to cope with the climbing temperatures, I traded in my leggings for a pair of the Old Navy Breathe On Utility-Pocket Shorts. And for the entire year since, I've been loving these lightweight, comfortable, super-soft shorts. Unsurprisingly, the titular pockets are one of this pair's best features—they're large and sturdy, and even with a phone tucked inside, they won't drag your shorts down. Unlike drawstrings on other pairs I've tried, the drawstring on this pair stays nice and snug while you're running errands (or running to lie down on the couch).

You can usually find these shorts on sale for about $20, and in the past year, for me, they've punched way above their price. These shorts have held up after a ton of washes—with no noticeable fading, stretching, or pilling—and they've been the perfect pair for remote work, hanging out at home, and big outings like grocery shopping. This summer, I'll be wearing them around Brooklyn, New York. They might even be nice enough to make their debut waiting in line at the post office.

Super-soft shorts to satisfy the most exacting among us

A person wearing pair of light grey Entireworld Loop Back Sweatshorts, the elastic waist band of the shorts visible.

Photo: Entireworld

I'm fairly picky when it comes to sweatshorts, though my requirements are few: They need to be comfortable enough to lounge in while I'm binge-watching a TV show, not too warm to sleep in, and not embarrassing to run errands in. And they need to have functional pockets. Entireworld's Loop Back Sweatshorts manage to meet all of these criteria. Plus, the high-quality Japanese terry fabric somehow feels cool against my skin. The slightly blousy, generous cut allows air in and keeps this pair feeling breezy, and it makes them feel less brief than their 3-inch inseam would have you believe (a positive, in my book). The angled cut and binding at the hems make the Entireworld shorts look less generic (possibly even flattering?) and less like I've given up on trying at all. But here's the real testament to how great they are: After receiving them, I put them on immediately, and I took them off only to swap in another pair, which I bought so I wouldn't have to go without—even on laundry days.
